There are more than five hundred species of flatfishes in the world, & all of them are born with normal eyes. Then, as they mature, the eyes migrate to one side. But, until 2008, biologists had no proof of the evolution of the migrating eyes. That's when European scientists discovered fifty-milloin-year-old fossils in the basement of a museum showing flatfish with only one fully migrated eye, proving that today's flatfish evolved over many millions of years.

Jon Schwartz kayak fishes for the most powerful game fish in the world: Marlin & Tuna. In 2003, he caught a Blue Marlin off the East Cape of Baja, California. The fish was so powerful that it towed him across the sea for an hour! That same year, he caught a 111-pound Tuna off the Kona Coast that nearly capsized his kayak. Incredibly, Schwartz was able to land the fish single-handedly from his kayak. (See photos of the battle at www.incrediblefishingstories.com)

All but one of the six all-tackle world record barbs were caught in Thai waters. The lone holdout is the hampala barb caught in Malaysian waters in 2002. That world record barb weighed 14 pounds 5 ounces. It is also the second largest of all the world record barbs. The largest is the giant barb that was caught in Bung Sam Lan Lake in 2004, weighing a whopping 114 pounds 10 ounces.

In 1993, seven year old Couger Elfervig was waiting for his dad to fuel their boat at Lake Powell's Bullfrog Marina when he decided to bait his hook & drop it in the water. He didn't expect the largest Carp ever caught in Utah waters to take the bait. For 15 minutes, Couger fought the record fish while his mother & sister kept him from falling off the dock. He landed the fish, but the scales were closed that day. After being kept in a cooler overnight, the big fish was weighed. The 30 pound Carp was the new state record, which still remains unbeaten.

Did you know that a single shark replaces as many as 25,000 teeth in it's lifetime? Some of those teeth end up in unlikely places. Many have been plucked from the hulls of boats after run-ins with the frenzying preditors. The Polynesians used them both as tools & to cut & prepare food. The ancients of Easter Island used them to carve hyroglyphs & more locally, Native Americans used shark's teeth as arrowheads.

When Dan Droessler, a Platteville, Wisconsin, police officer, went canoeing on Twin Valley Lake, the last thing he expected was to land a tiger muskie. He wasn't even fishing that day. Droessler was relaxing with his foot in the water when the 3-foot muskie spotted his shiny anklet & attacked. Droessler pulled his foot into the canoe along with the gnashing muskie, & then went to the hospital where it took sixty stitches to close the wound. Ironically, the Department of Natual Resources confiscated the fish becasue it was under the legal size limit & was also caught illegally. Droessler has applied for a special permit to get the fish, which was placed in a county freezer.

During a 2008 largemouth bass tournament, one bigger fish proved wilier than most. After taking the lure in its mouth, the 6-pounder flipped airborne & snapped the anglers line. Ten minutes later, the bass surfaced in the nearby reeds & spit the lure, which clung to the floating reeds. The angler netted the lucky lure & a fish story to last a lifetime.

Way back in 1990, Captain Al Anderson was the honorary recipient of the American Littoral Society's 250,000th fish tag. Captain Anderson, a well known tag & release fisherman, went fishing & used the tag on a 24 pound striped bass caught off Narragansett, Massachusetts. It was Anderson's 1,800th tagged fish. No word yet on whether the fish has been recaught, but since striped bass can live more than 40 years, it remains a possibility.

Ever heard of a burrfish? Two of the three all tackle world records were caught in American waters. The largest is the spotted burrfish, which weighed 13 pounds, 12 ounces & was landed off Haulover, Florida. The other is the striped burrfish, which weighed 1 pound, 6 ounces & was landed off Deleware Bay, New Jersey.

A new species of thick-lipped catfish found in South America's Orinoco river basin has been named Rhinodoras gallagheri by the Academy of Natural Science. Why gallagheri, you ask? Because Frank Gallagher worked in the mailroom of the Academy for 37 years & was so well liked that when he retired, the Academy decided to honor him with a fish.

Is there really such a thing as a hermaphrodite fish? Well, sort of. Scientists studying Potomac River smallmouth bass have discovered industrial pollutants have added sex organs to the fish. The culprit is human estrogen in sewage that enters the river system. Perhaps we should worry about the effect these pollutants may have on the area's drinking water. Gulp.

After Fred Stephens of Solana Beach, California, caught a sailfish of the coast of Costa Rica, he decided to release it. Sensing the fish was under abnormal stress due to the hook lodging near the fishes eye, Stephens performed as unorthodox release. He jumped into the water & swam the fish back to health.
