Just Learning
« on: May 04, 2009, 01:02:51 PM »
My friend take me fishing and I liked it very much. I am not good at all. I need to learn. I do not own my own fishing rod.

I think that is where I need to start.

What is good rod and reel to buy under 100 dollar.

I see picture here of some one catch fish from public pier. Is that good place to go?

Thank You very much for any help.

Go to Walmart and buy a few cheap rods to get started.

50 to 60 bucks and you can have rods, hooks, line even plastic bait.

You can fish any of the bridges, piers or beaches.
Get yourself some live shrimp and have fun.

Good Luck and keep us posted. Send Pictures

Win...As Julie stated, you can get a decent rod/reel combo at WalMart. Look for a 7' medium action spinning setup that can handle up to 20 lb test line. The rod has markings on it that state what size line and lure it handles. Then grab a package of circle hooks. I like owner, light wire in the 1/0 or 2/0 size. Then you need leader material. Flourocarbon is preferred, but ir is pricey and not necessary. Grab a package of swivels and a few egg sinkers (the ones with the holes through them). Set up a simple knocker rig. Pass your line through the sinker & tie to the swivel. Tie the leader to the swivel & the hook. The swivel keeps the sinker from going to the hook. This rig works from piers, beaches, jetties, etc. If you can, get a copy of the book, "Baits, Rigs & Tackle".  Grab some shrimp & give it a shot. There is a lot of info on the internet as far as knots & rigging go. Good luck.
One only needs two tools in life: WD-40 to make things go, and duct tape to make them stop.

Win,

The links at the bottom have some knot sites that you can learn to tie knots.

My suggestion is to just learn 1 or 2 knots right now.

The Palomar knot is very easy to learn and will work for most of your needs.

You might want to learn the Uni to Uni splice if you plan on using leaders on your main line.

If you are going to use a knocker rig the Improved Clinch knot is very good one.

As far as buying rods and reels, you might want to find a tackle shop close to you and buy from them.

The cost might be a little more but the information they will provide you will be invaluable.
The tackle shop people will spend the time with you to guide you and help you.

You not going to find people at Walmart with the knowledge for time to help you.

Tackle shops will also inform you where to find fish too, what bait to use and what type of equipment you need to catch them.

If you make a friend at your local tackle shop and let them guide you a little on the type of equipment, baits and locations you will learn much faster and catch more fish.

You might be able to save money at Walmart but you will learn a lot more about fishing from your local tackle shop guys.

Good Luck,

That's pretty good advice. The clerks at Walmart can’t help you at all.

Just starting out tackle shop's will help you a lot more then wal mart.
wal mart has good deals but no help at all. At wal mart you will get better help asking another customer.
