Just Bad Luck??
« on: March 29, 2009, 08:49:12 PM »
I go fishing a lot! I mainly stick to the Peace River area in Charlotte Harbor. I can't say that I've never caught anything out of there, but it seems like every time I go out, I just can't bring in anything good. I can't go out much further than Port Charlotte Beach area due to my boat only being about 15ft. long, it just can't take to much of a beating. I have caught quite a few mangrove snapper & I've caught 2 & only 2 decent size redfish. They weren't keepers though. Anyways, my question is this, it seems that my buddy can go out the same day as I do, use the same bait, & catch everything! Tarpon, snook, snapper, you name it. I just don't get it! Am I doing something wrong?  ??? I love to fish & I am doing my best, but it just isn't working in my favor. Does anyone have any tips that will be helpful? Thank you!

A lot of it is putting your time in on the water and finding some good spots.

Offer to take one of your buddies on your boat and maybe he will show you a few of his spots and what technique he uses.

If one of your friends will not show you, hire a guide for a day or two and have him teach you some techniques for the type of fish you want to target.

Being out in Charlotte Harbor on your boat and not catching fish is still better than working! ;D

What type of rod, reels and line are you using?
I find using power pro line adds a lot of sensitivity to feeling the bite and if you can feel the fish biting you get more hook-ups.

I have several different rods & reels, but all of them are running power pro braided line. I have a medium heavy ugly stick with a penn reel, it is running 65lb. braid. I know it sounds heavy, but it works great when you hook a big one! I also have a medium light ugly stick with a bass pro reel which is pretty decent, it is running 10lb. braided line. I do know of a few good spots out there, but I suppose my timing is just all wrong. It seems that everytime I go out, the tide is either moving in or out to quickly. I will have to try to get someone to go with me as you all have suggested & try to find some better spots at the different tides. Thanks for the info guys! 8)

I would suggest a guide. How great is it that you are able to get out on the water as often as you do? Any day on the water is better than a day in an office! Good luck!

I don't have much info here to go on but I have been in a similar circumstance with my cousin, and I later found that he always faced the sun, where as I always put it at my back.  My cousin said the shadow I was casting would scare the fish.  Just a thought.

Go out fishing with your buddy.  Watch what he does differently than you and ask questions on why he does it that way.  You will learn.  Also, take him on your boat.  I've caught plenty of fish on boats smaller than 15 ft.

Steal his spots  ;D, I've never had any luck fishing in the harbor anyway so I stick to Boca and Stump passes and lemon bay.
