Huge Hammerhead!!!!
« on: June 13, 2009, 10:12:09 PM »
This is a huge hammerhead, that my boss from work, caught out at Boca Grande Pass this weekend! He didn't say how much it weighed or the total length of it, but if you look at the pics, it is a goliath! I do know that the trailer is a 24'er! Keep that in mind when you look at the shark. I will find out on Monday how long he faught it for....... ~`6   #2#   `1`

I honestly have no idea what happened to it, all I know is they caught it, put it on that trailer & took pictures. I will try to find out some more info tonight if I can.

It is a big shark though, huh?? I can only imagine the fight that came out of that sucker!!   ^   ~`6

As far as eating them, I don't think people eat hammer heads, even if they do, that one is so big that the meat would probably be pretty tuff & not worth much anyways.   $#^~

I think he is an Idiot for taking it out of the water. To big to eat or mount so other than loading it up to show it off what other purpose was there for killing it. It would have been much better to release it for somone else to catch another day. Just my 2 cents worth. I am getting tired of meaningless killing of sharks for photo purposes.

I do not see any reason for killing a shark that size. %2%

You can’t eat it, I was not part of any competition or tournament for money. Killing fish just to show them off to your friends, just doesn’t make sense anymore.

20 - 30 years ago people were not aware of conservation of the fish populations and many fish were killed for no reason. There is so much awareness of conservation and preserving the fish populations that angler’s should know better.

Maybe he is selling the fins on the shark fin market.

But let’s hope not.

Aparently the guy on the left in the first photo is actually the one who caught it. My boss said that they asked for help to bring it to shore, so he gave a hand. He is the guy on the right with the white visor.

I heard from a captain friend of mine that this particular guy had gotten the world record a few years ago for the biggest hammer head, he said that this guy is constantly tring to beat his own record, & if the shark is too small or doesn't serve any purpose to him that he dumps them in the groves. I do agree that is a shame to do something like that. To each his own, there is nothing that can be done about it now. Atleast not until someone makes them endangered or something.

I thought that shark was a little to big to try to eat!?!?   ~0~

The guy that has the record fishes for big hammers in the pass. The world record was pregnant and besides killing the shark, about 20 babies died. He donated that one to Mote. Another was donated as well and I know one was just dumped in a grove. They use stingrays for bait (hammerhead's love them.) I don't remember his name but he's been fishing the pass for years. While I don't agree with the senseless killing of a large shark, there is nothing illegal about it. He has a license and is allowed to take the shark. There is somewhat of a belief in the pass that if you do away with the predators, the tarpon will thrive. That's about all I'll say on that.
One only needs two tools in life: WD-40 to make things go, and duct tape to make them stop.

That is the same exact thing that my Captain friend told me. He does a lot of charters in Boca Grande Pass & he somewhat knows the guy too, he just can't remember the guys name for the life of him.    ~0~

I think his name is Bucky Dennis. And Mote did not take the second one because of all the bad publicity they got from the first pregnant shark he gave them.

Thats a huge hammer.  I was fishing in vinice off of sharkys pier and a guy hooked this 12 ft hammer.  took him an hour and a half to reel him in.  we then put three galfs in him and dragged him to the beach and then back up the pier.  They cut him up and cook the shark so it wasnt just a kill for no reason. ~`6

Pretty sweet shark! It's nice to see people keep them for food & not just to show it off.    :A

There is an article called How to Fillet a 200 lb Nurse Shark on the internet that shows a group of people processing this huge catch. The angler caught the fish off Naples. The neighbors kids came over and dissected the insides, another neighbor filleted the meat, and the last neighbor made fish chum from the guts the kids took out of the fish. Nothing was wasted on this fish except the carcass. The photo's are cool, it is amazing what the insides of a shark look like.
